Substances
Psilocybin

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic prodrug compound produced by more than 200 species of mushrooms, collectively known as psilocybin mushrooms. The most potent are P. azurescens, P. semilanceata, and P. cyanescens. As a prodrug, psilocybin is quickly converted by the body to psilocin, which has mind-altering effects similar, in some aspects, to those of LSD, mescaline, and DMT.

Effects
- The effects of psilocybin are highly variable and depend on the mindset and environment in which the user has the experience, factors commonly referred to as set and setting. In general, the effects include euphoria, visual and mental hallucinations, changes in perception, a distorted sense of time and spriritual experiences.
- The effects are commonly compared to those of LSD but with a significantly shorter effective period (the trip is more "controllable"), less risk of having bad trips (horror trips) and a comparatively rare occurence of sudden mood swings.
- Short-term side effects: Breathing difficulties, racing heart beat, change in pulse and blood pressure, increase in body temperature with outbreaks of sweating, loss of balance, altered sense of space and time. In individual cases panic reactions, fear/delusions are possible, in particular with mentally unstable people, but also in young users.
- Long-term side effects: There is as yet no evidence of damage to the organs due to the use of psychoactive mushrooms. With regular and frequent use of magic mushrooms, there is a risk of psychological dependency.
