Heroin

diamorphine
Heroin molecular scheme

A semi-synthetic, powerful analgesic opioid derived from Morphine, with 2.5 its potency. Infamous for a high addiction potential and fatal respiratory depression in overdose, C. R. Alder Wright first synthesised this compound in 1874 trying to find a less addictive alternative to Morphine. It occurs in the form of white, pink, brown or beige powder. A third kind of heroin can be sticky like liquid tar or hard like coal. In recent years, it has often been sold cut with the extremely potent fentanyl, causing a spike in overdose deaths.
